Luke’s Review

As a regular at Torquay Golf Club for the past couple of years, I have found it to be an exceptional venue that balances challenge with true accessibility. It stands out as one of the most forgiving courses in the local area, making it an ideal environment for golfers of varying abilities, particularly those with higher handicaps.

The Clubhouse Experience

The clubhouse serves as the heart of the club. It is a vibrant social hub where the community atmosphere is genuinely palpable. Whether or not you are playing a round, the terrace offers a perfect setting to unwind. The food quality is consistently high, and it is pleasantly surprising to find such well-portioned, high-quality meals at such a reasonable price point. The clubhouse overlooks the first tee, the 18th par 3, and the green of the 17th hole through the trees.

Course Design and Scenery

In terms of the course itself, it is thoughtfully designed. The back nine, in particular, offers some very rewarding holes. For example, the 10th hole is situated within a basin that gently slopes toward the green. A well-struck shot here can occasionally lead to a one-shot green on a par 4. While the 11th hole presents a significantly tougher challenge, the remaining holes are quite achievable, partly because there is minimal out-of-bounds terrain to contend with on that stretch of the course. Near the 8th hole, you get a view that overlooks Babbacombe, the sea, and the moors.

Future Improvements

The club remains committed to growth, evidenced by a recently unveiled 10-year master plan that aims to modernize course features and renovate the clubhouse interior. While the clubhouse currently retains a slightly dated aesthetic, it possesses a distinct charm that feels integral to the club’s character rather than a drawback. Beyond the sport, the club’s proactive approach to events, such as quiz and steak nights, further bolsters its status as a top-tier destination.

Practical Amenities

Practical amenities are well-handled. The practice facilities include two putting greens. One has a small incline, and another is flatter for more fundamental work. The chipping area is consistently popular, and the course management team ensures the facility stays in good condition, requiring play off mats during the winter months while promoting best-lie conditions. Regarding the driving range, it is best suited for shorter-range practice, as it is limited to 200 yards. Ultimately, Torquay Golf Club is a lovely venue that offers a sophisticated yet welcoming experience for both members and visitors.
