Watcombe is a small, dramatic cove north of Torquay, hemmed in by towering red sandstone cliffs that are among the most photogenic in Devon. The beach is primarily sand and pebble, and is reached via a steep woodland path — there’s no vehicle access to the beach itself, which keeps it refreshingly uncrowded. The sea here is clear and popular with wild swimmers and snorkellers. The walk down through the pine woods adds to the sense of arriving somewhere special. Dogs are welcome year-round.
